Player Profile – Brett Hamer Hamer likes to lay down the hammer Brett Hamer (pronounced HAY-mer) is a stay at home defenseman. That’s why he’s a little coy talking about his first Alberta Junior Hockey League goal. “It was kind of a surprise,” he recalls of the game where he put one up in the goal column in Drumheller. “It just managed to go in, it slipped in 5-hole.” While the move he made to make it happen was pretty nice, fans shouldn’t bank on him scoring very often. Rather, they should expect sound defensive play from the rookie defenseman. After making his way up through the AAA and AA ranks, Hamer had a tough time getting seen last year because of a broken collarbone. That meant he had to do a bit of extra work to get noticed and be invited to the junior A level. He made a strong impression at spring camp and arrived to main camp ready to go. “Coming into main camp, I saw that there were spots so I was really motivated to make the team.” Hamer made the team and has become a staple on the blue line. That’s good for the friends and family who get to watch the Calgarian play on a regular basis. “It’s definitely nice to be living at home and going to school with my friends,” says the 1997-born player. He has two goals for the season, if the one in Drumheller wasn’t enough: the first is to work on securing a NCAA scholarship and the second is to make the playoffs. Fans can count on his work being done from the backend. |
