Player Profile – Jordan Kancsal
Two sport athlete excels on ice
While most Jr. A hockey players take
time during the summer to relax, work
on their game and workout, Jordan
Kancsal straps on the equipment to
play a different game. The goaltender
for the Jr. A Mountaineers lacrosse
team, he jumps from high level hockey
to lacrosse when the sun is at its
peak.
“It makes it easier to block shots,”
he admits with a laugh referencing how
his lacrosse skills translate to the
ice. “I’ve learned a lot about
leadership and how to play in pressure
situations. I’ve represented Canada
for Alberta.”
While he is a high level lacrosse
player, his position as goalie doesn’t
translate to the needs of the American
college game. His focus, then, is to
get a scholarship based on his work on
the ice: “School is my priority, so if
I can get a sport to pay, that would
be awesome. I want to progress
through school; if you get hurt, my
career would end tomorrow. I want the
schooling.”
Another born and raised Calgarian,
Kancsal played two years in Olds
before landing with the Canucks after
a deal to play in Whitecourt didn’t
work. Because of the nature of the
Canucks organization, he was sure to
find a former teammate in his new
lineup. Sam Plaquin was his linemate
in the Northstars AAA organization.
“It’s nice to be home,” he says of his
return to Calgary. “It’s nice to play
in front of friends and family. It’s
a great organization and a great
coaching staff.”
After 13 points his first year, he had
17 points the next two. Kancsal knows
he needs to raise his game to achieve
his goals. “I want to produce more
offensively. I want to give the team
a chance to win. It doesn’t matter
what I’m asked to do, I want to do it
to the best of my abilities.” He is
already on track to surpass those
numbers.
He believes that he can play a part in
the team’s success. “It’s a great
group of guys,” he says of the team.
“There are no divisions; it’s a
family. I think we can have a lot of
success. Our speed, skill and work
ethic are important. The veterans
support the younger guys. It will
lead to success in this league.”
While is Jr. A lacrosse season that
runs through the summer might be over,
he is just starting what should be his
best Jr. A hockey campaign yet.
