Player Profile – Michael Janz Michael Janz just wants to play high level hockey. Though he was courted by many teams in Alberta, he picked the team were he thought he could have the highest impact and it looks like he will develop that way. “I saw what the Canucks wanted to do to rebuild,” he says. “We’re trying to recreate an identity.” Another player who grew up and lives in Calgary, Janz played four years for the Royals before turning to the Canucks. So far, he’s been playing his part: trying to fit in the role to which he’s assigned. “I see myself as a skilled guy; scoring and setting up. If I can be in the lineup in that role, that’s good by me. I could even be in a shutdown role.” Most of the year, he has been in that type of shutdown position on some occasions while going on the offense other times. He feels the competition from one of the team’s with the most rookies of the year and it helps push him further. As one of many 1995 born players on the team, he knows that he isn’t only working for this year but for the future as well. “There are so many young guys working hard to stay in the lineup.” Despite the team’s rough first half, Janz remains optimistic about the team’s chances. “I think we’ll be shocking a lot of people. Our record doesn’t accurately show what we can do; we have that underdog role.” As for Janz, he likes the opportunity to play at home and hopes his work leads to an NCAA scholarship. “Obviously everyone’s goal is the NHL, but I really want to go to the NCAA. I want to make it to the NCAA after a couple years of Junior A.” |
